Contains 2002 music manuscripts acquired by Marian Anderson during her career. The majority of the collection comprises songs, many of which were submitted to Anderson with letters from the composers or lyricists. The collection includes approximately 66 sets of parts for instrumental or orchestral accompaniments, 173 settings of spirituals, 50 titles by Latin American composers, and 676 titles by women composers (assigned the subject heading: Women composers' music).

Marian Anderson was born on February 27, 1897 (although throughout much of her life she gave her birth date as February 17, 1902) in south Philadelphia. Her father, John Berkley Anderson, sold ice and coal and her mother Annie Delilah Rucker Anderson was a former schoolmistress. She was the oldest of three sisters.
